In her report, Dr. France found that this was the skull of a male of European ancestry (Caucasian), with an age at death of late teens to early twenties. She had moved to Texas from Mexico and no dental records could be found for her for comparison. In a new and unique use of DNA, letters were obtained from her family members in Mexico. She had written to them and traces of her saliva remained from licking the envelopes to seal them. Anthropological input was provided by Dr. David Glassman. I created drawings, both frontal and lateral, to project how the victim might have appeared in life. Rubber tissue depth markers were affixed to the skull at certain bony landmarks and were the basis for the overall facial contours. Anatomical formulas were used to estimate the eyes and nose but the mouth area proved to be more problematic. Incredibly, he seemed to be wearing the same shirt. Some excellent cooperative police work was done by multiple investigators from several different jurisdictions. Over time, they were able to tie Corwin to multiple rapes and at least three murders. One murder in Huntsville, Texas was committed at a carwash and a young mother was brutally stabbed in front of her 3-year-old daughter. I will never forget photos of this precious child in a white ballerina's tutu stained red with her mother's blood. Corwin was tried using new Texas laws that allowed for prosecution of a serial killer, and including several murders committed in varying jurisdictions...all in one trial. After a short deliberation period, he was convicted of capital murder and given the death penalty. It was necessary to recreate the missing mandible, a task I have successfully done a number of times on forensic identification-related cases. I also used the maxillary or upper dental fossa areas to get clues for re-building the upper dentition. The addition of teeth helps to more accurately determine the overall facial height. Caldwell of the Oakland, California Police Department's Bureau of Identification. It is Caldwell who is credited with the founding of the International Association for Identification in 1915. I was experimenting with how to add his wire-framed glasses. I used these actual glasses as a guide for the carefully sculpted ones I then added. It is sometimes possible for glasses to be molded, cast separately and then welded on. Some sculptors prefer this but it was not my preference for this project. I opted to sculpt a suggestion of glasses in clay that would incorporate them more directly into the sculpture. Sculpting in real time would be far too time-consuming during filming, so all of this advance preparation was necessary. Some of the other advisors have problems with it.” We then had a good chat about real autopsies, testifying against real rapists and murderers and trying to help real crime victims. I explained that stress for me was struggling to do a fast and accurate composite sketch when a child had been abducted and the news crews were outside my door waiting…the potential for life or death. He totally got it and understood why I was unfazed, even a bit amused by the “Hollywood” variety of stress. I have gained a genuine respect for the pressure-filled schedules and demanding work that is necessary during the creation of television shows. I am awed by the amazing skill and craft of the actors and all of the various individuals involved in production of a show like CSI:. Many historians disagreed with this portrayal since written records indicated a different type of individual. An important element of the plot dealt with the dental morphology of an “unidentified victim”. As part of the consultation I did with the writer, I suggested that this dental detail would be a useful tool to add authenticity to the props I was preparing. I then modified an existing skull to add a large space between the maxillary central incisors called a diastema. This was done by individually sculpting the teeth and painting them in a naturalistic way. One of the anthropologists, Dr. Kate Spradley, commented that she could “see” how I was thinking my way around the skull, which made me really happy.
